Table Rock Lake at a Glance

Table Rock Lake is one of the clearest, most beautiful lakes in the Midwest and the crown jewel of the Missouri Ozarks. Sitting about 10 miles south of Branson, the lake stretches across 42,400 acres with 715 miles of deeply wooded shoreline carved through limestone bluffs and rolling Ozark hills.

The lake was created in 1958 when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers completed Table Rock Dam on the White River, a $65 million project designed for flood control and hydroelectric power. What they also created was one of the finest recreational lakes in the country.

What makes Table Rock special is its water. Fed by deep springs and filtered through limestone, the lake has the highest water clarity of any lake in Missouri. On a calm day you can see 15 to 20 feet down in the main channel. The maximum depth reaches 220 feet near the dam, with an average depth of 70 to 80 feet, giving the water that distinctive blue-green color that looks more like the Ozarks' answer to Lake Tahoe than a Midwestern reservoir.

The significance of lake-based recreation is well documented, with proximity to water consistently adding measurable value to vacation experiences.

How Proximity to Lakes Enhances Vacation & Property Value Lake view premium: $45,949 (average value of all properties $104,956); value declined $188 per 10 m from a lake. The contribution of scenic views of, and proximity to, lakes and reservoirs demonstrates how proximity to clean, recreational water bodies significantly enhances both property values and the overall vacation experience for travelers. The contribution of scenic views of, and proximity to, lakes and reservoirs to property values, S Nicholls, 1990

Beaches & Swimming

Moonshine Beach

Families swimming and sunbathing at Moonshine Beach on Table Rock Lake

Moonshine Beach is the only sand swim beach on Table Rock Lake, and it's worth every bit of the $5 access fee. Located at 3778 South Highway 165, just north of Table Rock Dam, this is where families, couples, and friend groups come to spread out on the sand and swim in that impossibly clear water.

The beach is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and comes with more amenities than most lake beaches: picnic areas with grills, a playground, volleyball court, flush restrooms with showers, a food vendor, and a 75-person group picnic shelter you can reserve for gatherings. There's also a boat ramp and courtesy dock if you want to arrive by water.

One tip: parking fills up fast on summer weekends. Carpooling helps, and boat ramp parking is off-limits for beach visitors. Arrive before 10 a.m. on Saturdays in July and August if you want a good spot.

Other Swimming Areas

If Moonshine Beach feels too crowded, Table Rock Lake has more than a dozen additional public swim areas managed by the Army Corps of Engineers. Indian Point is the quieter option closest to our Cliffs Resort rentals and Silver Dollar City. Beaver, on the lake's southwest corner, draws fewer crowds and has wide-open water. Cape Fair is another solid choice for families who want space to spread out. Other access points include Aunts Creek, Baxter, Campbell Point, Cricket Creek, Eagle Rock, Mill Creek, Old 86, Port of Kimberling, and Viola.

Water Temperatures

Swimming season typically runs from late May through September. Summer surface temperatures reach 75 to 85 degrees, with peak warmth in July. Spring warms gradually from the mid-50s to upper 70s. By October, the water is still a pleasant 70 to 75 degrees — warmer than most people expect for fall.

Boating & Water Sports

Family enjoying a pontoon boat ride on the clear waters of Table Rock Lake

With 715 miles of shoreline and 42,400 acres of water, Table Rock Lake is built for boating. Whether you want a lazy pontoon afternoon, a high-speed jet ski run, or a guided wakeboarding session, the infrastructure here is outstanding.

Marinas & Boat Rentals

Table Rock Lake has 14 full-service marinas ringing its shores. The most convenient for Branson-area visitors:

  • State Park Marina — Closest to Table Rock Dam and Branson. Rents pontoons, fishing boats, kayaks, canoes, and specialty boats. Also offers parasailing through American Parasail.
  • Port of Kimberling Marina — The largest full-service marina on the lake. Boat rentals, slip rentals, fuel, and the popular Pier 28 boat-up restaurant. Close to our Kimberling City rentals.
  • Indian Point Marina — Near Silver Dollar City on the lake's north side. Great for combining a theme park day with an afternoon on the water.
  • Bass Pro Shops Long Creek Marina — Near Ridgedale on the south arm. Connected to the Big Cedar Lodge resort complex.
  • Kings River Marina — 4 miles south of Shell Knob on a quieter arm of the lake. Tritoon and fishing boat rentals.
  • Baxter Marina — Central location with the largest pontoon rental fleet on the lake.

Kayaking & Paddleboarding

Table Rock Lake Toys in Kimberling City rents single kayaks, tandem kayaks, fishing kayaks, and paddleboards, with delivery to your dock or rental. State Park Marina also rents kayaks and canoes with life vests included. The coves near Indian Point and the James River arm are particularly scenic for paddling, with limestone bluffs rising from the shoreline and minimal boat traffic in the back channels.

Jet Skis, Parasailing & Tubing

Jet ski rentals run about $75 per hour at most marinas. Riders must be 16 or older and complete a Missouri boating safety course. Parasailing is available at State Park Marina. Tube rentals (3 to 4 person capacity) average around $50 per day. For the more adventurous, wake surfing sessions start around $375 per hour with a two-hour minimum.

Stay Steps From the Water

Our Kimberling City properties include private boat launch access and boat parking — load up and be on the lake in under 5 minutes. The Tablerock Retreat is a lakefront penthouse with panoramic views from a private deck.

Fishing Guide

Angler bass fishing from a boat on Table Rock Lake at sunrise

Table Rock Lake is consistently ranked among the top bass fishing lakes in the United States, drawing tournament anglers and weekend fishermen alike. The lake's depth, clarity, and rocky structure create ideal habitat for multiple bass species, crappie, walleye, and catfish.

What You'll Catch

The primary game fish in Table Rock Lake are largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, spotted bass, white bass, black crappie, white crappie, walleye, bluegill, channel catfish, blue catfish, flathead catfish, and paddlefish. The spotted bass fishery is particularly strong — Table Rock is one of the best spotted bass lakes in the country.

One important distinction: there are no trout in Table Rock Lake itself. Trout fishing happens on Lake Taneycomo, the cold-water tailrace directly below Table Rock Dam, where water releases from the bottom of the dam keep temperatures around 48 degrees year-round. Taneycomo holds rainbow and brown trout and is a premier fly fishing destination with a Special Management Area in the 3-mile stretch below the dam. Our Fall Creek Condos give you quick access to Taneycomo's trout waters.

Best Seasons for Fishing

  • Spring (March–May): The best all-around fishing season. White bass congregate in tributaries in March. Bass move to shallow spawning beds in April and May. Crappie spawn on shallow rocky banks and brush piles. Focus on the White River, James River, Kings River, and Long Creek arms.
  • Summer (June–August): Fish move deeper (30 to 70 feet). Spotted bass become the primary target on the main lake. Early mornings and late evenings are most productive. Deep structure and offshore points are key.
  • Fall (September–November): Excellent crappie and bass fishing as shad migrate into tributary arms. Fish the backs of coves, creek channel swing banks, and shallow water fingers. Many locals consider fall the most consistent season.
  • Winter (December–February): Slower but productive for crappie on deep brush piles and under docks. Spotted and smallmouth bass school in deeper water. Fewer anglers means more water to yourself.

Research consistently confirms that access to quality recreational fishing adds significant value to vacation destinations.

Valuing Recreation Amenities in Vacation Rentals Hedonic prices are estimated for summer and winter rentals for vacation houses located near a lake and ski-golf resort. Regressions for weekly rents conditioned on house size, quality, and recreation features indicate that access to recreation is reflected importantly in rental offers. Evaluated at the means, lakefront locations command a premium of $1,100–1,200 per week. Regulations & Licenses

Non-residents age 16 and older need a Missouri fishing license. Options include a daily license ($8), 3-day, or annual ($49 to $53.50). If you fish the Arkansas side of the lake, you'll need a White River Border Permit or an Arkansas license. Key limits: black bass have a 15-inch minimum, crappie a 10-inch minimum with a 15-fish daily limit, and walleye an 18-inch minimum. Paddlefish season runs March 15 through April 30 with a 34-inch minimum body length.

Fishing Guide Services

Hiring a local guide is the single best investment you can make to maximize your time on the water. Captain Rick's Guide Service has over 30 years on Table Rock Lake and specializes in instructional trips. Eric's Elite Guide Service is run by an FLW Touring Pro. Branson Fishing Adventures offers trips for up to 6 people starting around $350. Other well-regarded operations include Captain B's, Magic Spot, Focused Fishing, Breaking Bass, and Dodson Guide Service.

Table Rock Lakeshore Trail

This 2.25-mile paved trail between the Dewey Short Visitor Center and State Park Marina is the easiest way to experience the lake on foot. It's flat, accessible, and hugs the shoreline with water views nearly the entire way. Great for families with strollers or anyone who wants a scenic walk without a strenuous climb.

Ruth and Paul Henning Conservation Area

This 1,534-acre conservation area sits right in the Branson hills and offers five trails ranging from the 0.4-mile paved Dewey Bald Trail (good for beginners) to the 3.4-mile Homesteaders Trail, which takes about 3 hours and is the most challenging hike in the area. The landscape includes bottomland forest, open glades, and diverse Ozark wildflowers. It's quiet, uncrowded, and free.

Dogwood Canyon Nature Park

Created by Bass Pro Shops founder Johnny Morris, Dogwood Canyon spans 2,200 acres across the Missouri-Arkansas border. You can hike or bike 6.5 miles of paved trails, explore 3 miles of unpaved hiking-only trails, take a guided tram tour, go trout fishing, or ride horseback through the canyon. It's a polished, well-maintained experience that feels more like a national park than a private reserve.

When to Visit: Seasonal Guide

Spring (March – May)

Water: 56–77°F

The lake wakes up. Bass and crappie move to spawning beds in the shallows, making spring the best all-around fishing season. Hiking trails are green and wildflowers bloom across the glades. Crowds are thin, rates are lower, and the weather is warm enough for kayaking and paddleboarding by late April. Silver Dollar City opens for the season.

Summer (June – August)

Water: 75–85°F

Peak season. The water is warm, every marina is buzzing, and the lake is at its most alive. Swimming, tubing, jet skiing, parasailing, and wakeboarding are all in full swing. Floating restaurants open. Fireworks over the lake on July 4th. This is also the busiest time, so book your vacation rental early and arrive at Moonshine Beach before 10 a.m.

Fall (September – November)

Water: 70–82°F

The locals' favorite season. The water is still warm enough for swimming into early October, the Ozark foliage turns brilliant reds and golds, and the fishing picks up as shad move into the arms of the lake. Crowds thin out dramatically. Fall is the most scenic time to hike, paddle, and photograph the lake. Enjoy it from a Cliffs Resort balcony at shoulder-season pricing.

Winter (December – February)

Water: 42–47°F

The quietest season on the lake, and the best time for deep-water crappie fishing if you're willing to brave the cold. Branson's holiday shows and Christmas lights draw visitors despite the chill. The lake takes on a calm, meditative quality. Curl up by a fireplace at The Cliffs with lake views and off-season pricing.

Getting There & Practical Tips

How to Get to Table Rock Lake

The nearest commercial airport is Springfield-Branson National Airport (SGF), about 60 miles north (roughly 1 hour 10 minutes by car). Branson Airport (BKG) is just 16 miles away but has limited service. Driving, Table Rock Lake is about 4 hours south of Kansas City on Highway 65 and about 1 hour from Springfield.

Cell Service

Coverage is spotty around the lake, especially on the water and in the coves. AT&T generally has the most reliable signal. Verizon coverage is more limited, particularly at the state park area. If you need consistent connectivity for remote work, look for a rental with WiFi rather than relying on cellular — all Aha Moments properties include high-speed WiFi.

Boating Safety

Life jackets are required for all children under 7 and recommended for everyone. Missouri law requires a Boater's Safety License for anyone born after January 1, 1984. Essential equipment includes a fire extinguisher, first-aid kit, throwable flotation device, whistle or horn, and navigation lights for evening use. Always check weather forecasts before heading out — Ozark storms can build quickly.
